The Ark
The NLA (New London Architecture) recently held an exhibition featuring over 100 current workplace projects and initiatives, highlighting the breadth of new and exciting ideas within the capital.
Working with colleagues from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, we proposed a radical new model that provides office space within underused churches. The Ark could offer a unique alternative to the London office rental market, whilst supporting the finances of city churches. Church conversions are all too familiar, but their sale on the open market breaks the historic pattern of continuous, responsible ownership; and cuts ties between churches and their traditional use.
Leasing reversible, demountable ‘office pods’ within underused naves, whilst retaining an east end open for prayer, generates revenue for the upkeep of historic city churches, whilst providing sustainable working environments.
