Michael studied Architecture at Bath University and graduated in 2016 with a first class degree. His final thesis was awarded a number of architectural prizes, including the RIBA Wessex Design Prize, the 3D Reid Student Prize and the prestigious European Architectural Medal. His university work also received a nomination for the RIBA Silver Medal and the Archiprix International Prize, an award which recognises the world’s best architectural projects.
At Bath, Michael developed a passion for sketching; influenced by the beautiful Georgian parades and townhouses. Drawing became a tool for understanding form, detail, atmosphere and overall composition. His drawings are entirely hand drawn, capturing the essence of a building, structure or streetscape through black ink on paper. The illustrations are often amplified through a single block of colour, highlighting a particular aspect of the image. His work has featured in a number of publications and several galleries across the country; most recently his sketchbook was selected for the Royal West Academy Open Exhibition 2018 and awarded second place for the Architecture Prize. Michael was also awarded a high commendation at the Georgian Group International Measured Drawing Prize 2017. All of his drawings are available to buy online via Etsy (just click on the shop section above). You can also find Michael on Catherine Hill every first Sunday of the month at the Frome Independent Market.
In addition to illustration, Michael is currently working at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in Bath and working towards his RIBA part III. He is also a visiting critic and part time teaching fellow at the University of Bath.
